James Peter Downey

James “J.P” Peter Downey, age 89 of Maryville, TN passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Foothills Transitional Care & Rehabilitation in Maryville, TN. J.P. was born on April 23, 1933 in Monette, AR to the late Ruby Pearl and Frank Norris Downey. He was a member of the Stewart Church of Christ for many years. J.P. was a kind, quiet man of God. J.P. served his country for 8 years in the U.S Army and National Guard during the Korean Theatre. He helped build Cumberland City Steam Plant. After retiring as a Boilermaker Welder, J.P. toiled in his vineyard. J.P. was a storyteller and jokester. He was an avid outdoorsman. J.P. enjoyed nature. He loved feeding the birds and squirrels. J.P. will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He was very well thought of in the community for his generosity and selflessness.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Becky Storey (Hal) of Booneville, MS, Janet Dulley (Danny) of Cumberland City, TN, Steven Loyd Downey (Barbara) of Smyrna, TN, David Downey of Tennessee Ridge, TN and Susan Tatum-Roach of Townsend, TN; brother, Robert Edwin Downey (Levae) of Hot Springs, AR; sister, Jo Alla Croner of Memphis, TN; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, J.P. is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Joyce C. Downey and niece, Anita Jo.

A visitation for J.P. will be held Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly, and also on Monday, April 3, 2023 beginning at 12:00 P.M. until the hour of service at 2:00 P.M. Bro. James Boren will officiate the service. Interment to follow at Richlawn Cemetery in Waverly.
