Walter Russell Collier, age 84, of Waverly, passed from this life on Saturday, December 7, 2019, surrounded by his family that he dearly loved. A Native of Humphreys County, he was born September 16, 1935 to Walter Martin Collier and Viola Wheeler Collier.
He was a 1954 graduate of Waverly Central High School and a graduate of Draughn’s Business College in Memphis, Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he met his wife of 55 years, Crystel Sutton Collier of Columbus, Georgia. To that union was born two daughters, Paige Collier Horn (Lee) and Kelly Collier Galbraith (Rob). He enjoyed and was blessed with four grandchildren, Jackson Horn, Hunter Galbraith, Anna Kate Horn, and Sarah Galbraith. He is also survived by a sister, Linda Collier Brazzle and a niece, Lisa Brazzle Craig (Marty).
He had a fulfilling career with E.I. Dupont spanning 36 years, retiring in 1996 as a Stores Supervisor. He enjoyed painting, fishing, history, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He served as a Boy Scouts Leader nurturing several young men to achieving Eagle Scout, the highest award of B.S.A. He served as a deacon and later an elder of the Waverly church of Christ, where he cherished many relationships with his Christian brethren. He was actively involved with the Humphreys County Historical Society, and he served as a docent for the Humphreys County Museum. His gentle and humble spirit will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation for Mr. Walter Collier will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2019, beginning at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and on Friday, December 13, 2019, beginning at 11:00 AM until service time at 1:00 PM, at Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly, TN. Bro. Jeff Keele will officiate the service. Interment will be at Richlawn Cemetery in Waverly, Tennessee. Luff-Bowen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
